What is it?  Experts say it's a previously undiscovered deep sea fish, used to living in depths where natural sunlight never reaches.  How it ended up in my swimming pool is a compete and total mystery...

Here's my entry to the January Mad Lab contest!   I'm going to keep this tutorial simple and post some pictures documenting the process of putting together the fish with some really basic descriptions.

Fish's body.  Made from paper mache over a ball of crumpled newspaper, then cut open and the newspaper stuffing removed.

Added the mouth using another paper mache ball made in the same method.  Teeth are wooden coffee stirrers, all duct taped in place, then covered with a layer of paper mache.

I made another paper mache piece for the tail, then taped and paper mached it into place.

Fins made from rolled newspaper was added, then the whole fish was covered with a layer of tissue paper mache.

And for the cork!  I used it to build up the fish eyes.  The cork was cut in half and glued into place where I wanted the eyes to go.  I printed out some fish eyes that I found on google onto glossy paper, cut them out, and then glued them to the cork.  Using more tissues, I built up the flesh around the eyes until I got the look I wanted.

Finally, I painted the fish, and I was done!

Love it!!!

Wouldn't it be neat to see a few of these floating (hanging from fishing line) at different heights, together in a room.

Very nice creation!!

I wasn't exactly happy with the original paint job I gave my fish.  He looked too tropical for what was intended to be more along the lines of a deep water fish.  Here's the new look:

I also started a new blog about the stuff I make out of paper mache.  I haven't put all too much up yet, but when I get some time I'll go back and put up more of my past/future creations.  Just in case anyone is interested:
